A moderate-paced 10-mile walk from Fort Totten through Little Neck Bay and Oakland Lake to Douglas Manor, with lunch at Alley Pond Environmental Center and bus connections from and back to Flushing.
Take a moderate-paced 10-mile walk past Little Neck Bay, Oakland Lake and historic Douglas Manor with Shorewalkers' members-only group, allowing for bus rides before and after the walk.
Distance 10 miles. Moderate pace. Walk from Fort Totten with its 19th century buildings, and views of Little Neck Bay, then along Little Neck Bay, then circumnavigate Oakland Lake, then lunch at the Alley Pond Environmental Center. Then on to Douglas Manor, a historic district. We meet at the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and Main Street in Flushing by the ATT store at 9:45 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. departure. An option for those who want to take the Long Island Railroad is to take the train to the Bayside station, then take the Q13 bus to Fort Totten. We should be at Fort Totten around 11:00 a.m. **There is a 40-minute bus ride to Fort Totten from our meeting location.** We will have a restroom stop before we board the bus to Fort Totten. Along the walk there will be four restroom stops in addition to the one before we get on the bus to Fort Totten. One will be at Fort Totten. The second will be at the same place when we leave Fort Totten, about 30 minutes later. Another will be at the Alley Pond Environmental Center, and the last restroom stop will be just before the end of the walk. **From the end of the walk there is a 30-minute bus ride to get back to Flushing where we met.**
