Organizer’s description
We are turning ten! Our TENTH session will be on a branch of philosophy you may not have heard of: metaethics! Do you ever wonder if morality is actually real? If it's just relative to our society and culture? We've all heard of societies with often radically different moral practices and norms. Could they be wrong? Could we be wrong? Maybe everyone is right, or maybe no one is right, or maybe exactly one moral system is objectively right. Or is it all just emotions? There are big costs to any of these options. There are more options to take too. If you have relativist inclinations, you will want to come to this session. But you will also want to come if you think morality is objective. We will challenge it all, we will try to reach a conclusion, and we assure you, we will pass no (moral!) judgment on anyone, including moral nihilists. We will only judge your arguments, not your character. Along the way, we will say things like error-theory and expressivism. Cool stuff! This session will feature Columbia professor Justin Clarke-Doane! While you wait, you may want to check out this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1RXq_Mo4lg And if you like philosophy in British accent, here is a cool philosopher talking about metaethics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs7fBx-zURw As always: No prior philosophy knowledge required. We will define all terms.
