With rope climbing... * You climb in pairs - the climber on the wall & the belayer on the ground ensuring the climber doesn't fall. Belayers need to learn how to belay & pass a test administered by the gym staff for safety reasons! * At this gym, the climber doesn't need to take a test (the belayer can check safety for both people); however, it's unlikely that for you to find a partner who only ever wants to belay from the ground while you're climbing.
