Kevlin Henney discusses Barbara Liskov and collaborators’ work on abstract data types and the CLU language, including its historical context and influence on programming language design.

AI summary · From the event listing

Kevlin Henney presents: "Programming with Abstract Data Types" (1974) and "Abstraction Mechanism in CLU" (1977) by Barbara Liskov (and collaborators). Abstract Data abstraction arrived in the 1970s as a paradigm in its own right. It became absorbed into other paradigms, from object orientation to functional, and has heavily influenced programming language design since. At the heart and start of this was Barbara Liskov's work with the CLU language. In this talk we'll take a trip back to the mid-1970s to explore work led by Liskov in "Programming with Abstract Data Types" and "Abstraction Mechanism in CLU", taking in the context in which these ideas emerged and the long-term influences on program and language design. The Speaker Kevlin Henney is an independent advisor, consultant, speaker and writer. He has written and edited books on software architecture, patterns and development practices, and been active in the C++ standardisation process. Kevlin has contributed to open source, to the Modern Software Engineering YouTube channel, and has written for many publications, including The Register and the O'Reilly Radar.
