AI summary · From the event listing
Exit Strategies brings together the work of Melanie Bisbach, Danielle Chandler and AJ Miller, three artists whose sculptures and installations offer plans of escape in a chaotic world and trace the echoes of an absent subject. Each artist uses craft-based techniques and materials, exploring new coping mechanisms for the stressful environments in which they reside. Bisbach’s porcelain sculptures isolate botanical forms from the living things they describe, fixing blades of grass in permanence to be read. Chandler’s ceramic and textile works construct inner architectures. Her installation invites visitors to enter, for a time, to be vulnerable, and choose what to guard and what to reveal. Similarly, Miller’s commentary on domestic craft treats the hobby as a fragile form of leisure in an uncertain economy. Exit Strategies constructs a threshold: one that allows viewers to find themselves outside their reality. This exhibition is presented by Syracuse University’s L.A. Turner Semester Residency Program and made possible through the generous support of Marylyn Turner Ginsburg Klaus and Chuck Klaus and Syracuse University's School of Art. Syracuse University’s L.A. Turner Semester Residency Program is a semester-long career development opportunity for MFA Graduate Students in the School of Art to come to Los Angeles to live and work for a semester. Designed specifically to develop and employ essential professional practices in the arts.
