Organizer’s description
🤖 All seven deadly sins are at play..... 👋 Hello everyone! It has been nearly a hundred years since the premiere of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927), and it remains a source of fascination for generations of filmgoers. Even if you’ve never seen it, you can no doubt recognize the iconic images it has inspired in popular culture around the world, such as in Queen's Radio Ga Ga music video. Its bizarre juxtaposition of medieval melodrama with futuristic themes creates a truly unique cinematic experience. In 2002, Metropolis was the first film admitted by UNESCO into its Memory of the World Register. There, it joined the ranks of other historic works of art like Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and the Gutenberg Bible. Simply put, it’s almost unthinkable for anyone seriously interested in film history not to give this movie its due. Metropolis is still very much fresh and relevant to the current AI times. For instance, when Maria’s robotic doppelganger exhorts the masses to rise up from their underground city, her cry resonates down the decades: Who is the living food for the machines of Metropolis?, Who lubricates the machine joints with their own blood?, Who feeds the machines with their own flesh?. Her call to revolution now captures our post-Fordist era of Big Data vampires, from Fitbit to social media networks and AI models. The Meetup: There will be live piano music accompanying the film screening.
