Ethan Saso discusses how Klados uses structured morphological data to help people identify species and support community science.

AI summary · From the event listing

Speaker: Ethan Saso Program: “Klados: Democratizing Identification for Community Scientists” Community science is very good at recruiting observers, but prospective naturalists often hit a wall of inaccessibility when trying to identify what they find. The existing resources for this process can be expensive, out of print, out of date, or just too dense to be digested by a newcomer to the field. Klados, a community science platform for identification resources, provides a free alternative built on structured morphological data and designed to remove barriers to entry. This talk will examine what features and techniques we use to differentiate species, how taxonomists already think in machine-readable terms, and how structuring morphology can provide holistic resources for identification. More information about LAMS events, including a biography of the speaker, is available on the LAMS Calendar page. Directions to the community center are on the LAMS Locations page.
