Organizer’s description
It's getting darker earlier, so we're due for some updates! As of October 26, 2026, the starting point for the walk is 1 Harding Road, San Francisco. Look for the green picnic tables on the left. We'll meet by the statue of King Carlos III. There is plenty of parking, and the 58 bus passes by every 30 minutes. There are also bathrooms. We'll meet at 5:00 p.m. and take off shortly after. The most common route we take is along Lake Merced and up to the Observation Deck at Fort Funston, where we tend to stop for a bit to chat, watch for dolphins and whales, gaze in awe at the at the hang gliders and paragliders flying overhead, and enjoy the golden hour (or admire the fog). This walk, which totals 3 miles offers incredible views of Lake Merced, the ocean and coastline, San Bruno Mountain, Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson, and even the Golden Gate Bridge. An alternate walk that we do some weeks (from the same starting point), depending on interest, is Lake Merced the opposite direction, past the zoo and through Sunset Dunes to public seating & hammocks at Sunset Dunes & Taraval. The total for this route is also 3 miles. -Both routes are 100% paved. -The total is 3 miles. -The weather can be anything from warm and sunny to cold and windy, so it's best to wear layers. -Some neighbors and regulars don't check Meetup or register, so there may be more participants than officially registered.
