Organizer’s description
A traditional Southern Italian tambourine workshop inspired by the musical culture celebrated by La Notte della Taranta, one of the best-known festivals dedicated to the folk traditions of Salento, in Puglia. The workshop introduces participants to the tambourine, the distinctive rhythms of pizzica and their cultural background through practical group exercises. The event is being held at the English Folk Dance and Song Society and is suitable for beginners as well as people with previous musical experience. Through an organic, structured approach—featuring progressive exercises and theoretical frameworks—we will delve into tambourine techniques and performance styles, applying them to both traditional Central-Southern Italian repertoires and modern music. Broadening our horizons, we will also explore the styles and percussive expressiveness of other traditions, such as those from the Arab-Persian world, Latin America, India, and Northern Europe. The workshop is open to all levels, welcoming both beginners and those already familiar with the instrument.
