Organizer’s description

As the nights grow longer, what better time to explore the muddied shadows of our collective dreams and collective madness? Presenting three more Herzog films for your consideration: (This is a watch at home, discuss in person event.) Heart of Glass (1976) "In Director Werner Herzog's most conceptual film, a small Bavarian town is plunged into a mysterious and haunted despair when the owner of the town's glass factory dies without passing on the secret formula for its special ruby-colored glass." (Netflix synopsis) Production note: Herzog individually hypnotized nearly all of the performers before filming their scenes! *Stream on Tubi or Kanopy* Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010) Herzog's film crew explores the Chauvet cave in southeastern France, home to the world's oldest known paintings- around 30,000 years old. Do these depictions of our earliest dreams represent the moment humans became "human"? *Stream on Philo OR rent on major platforms* Encounters at the End of the World *(2007)* At McMurdo station in Antarctica, Herzog finds a community of scientists willing to endure one of the earth's most extreme climates in order to encounter the sublime. The underwater stills are already giving me chills. *Stream on YouTube* (Even though I'd rather start with Heart of Glass, I'm not sure how long *Encounters at the Edge of the World* will be available. You might want to start here.)
