This class series is no exception! Our sessions are paced to the people in the room. We’ll explore rhythmic structures, coordination, listening, and develop the common techniques found across many hand drums. Because people learn rhythm in different ways, we approach it in different ways. Seeing, hearing, and moving—observing motion in ourselves and others, using visual patterns, developing body awareness, and strengthening aural awareness through listening and response. We draw on grooves from West African and Latin American musical traditions as entry points into idiomatic hand drum rhythms. We name their origins where possible and remain honest about what an introductory class outside the tradition can—and cannot—teach. Questions are encouraged, all sonic contributions are valid, and the atmosphere is collaborative, enriching, lively, and easy-going.
