Skandia's First Friday dance in November will be both live and virtual! The dance will be held at the Cedar Valley Grange, 20526 52nd Ave W, Lynnwood, WA 98036. So, you can choose to attend in person or via Zoom. No partner required. First timers can attend in person for free! Lisa Brooks and Elaine Mathies will teach Åtabaks polska, which is a favorite Skandia dance. It is a lovely contemplative dance from Föllinge, Sweden. Then, Seattle Skandia Spelmanslag will fill the stage with a lively variety of string instruments — setting dancers in motion with couple and mixer dances that newer dancers can enjoy, along with a variety of other favorite dances at Skandia, including several Åtabaks polska tunes to give the pre‑dance workshop attendees extra practice. The Spelmanslag traces its roots to the days when Skandia dancers first traded 45‑rpm records for the lift and energy of live musicians. Today it remains an open, welcoming group for musicians of all experience levels who want to play traditional Scandinavian dance music. Its music leaders over the years have included Kris Forster (dc), Leslie Foley, Andrea Hoag, Elizabeth Foster, Ellen Wijsman, Bill Boyd, Kris Johansson, Anna Abraham, and Martha Levenson. The group meets regularly in Seattle and is currently led by Frank Brown.
