Permutation City

It's 2050 and rich people have stopped dying. When the body gives out, they get scanned and keep going as Copies, which are full software versions of themselves running inside virtual worlds. A Copy remembers your whole life and is convinced it's you. The catch is that computing time costs a fortune. Most Copies can only afford to run at a fraction of normal speed, so the outside world races by without them, and any of them can be switched off the day the money runs out. Locus Award Nominee for Best SF Novel and Philip K. Dick Award Nominee. 341 pages. Goodreads 4.04 with 13k+ ratings.
