FITZCARRALDO

(PG) West Germany/Peru – 2 hr 37 min 1982 · d. Werner Herzog Starring Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, José Lewgoy To finance his dream of opening an opera house in the Peruvian jungle, a would-be rubber baron attempts to exploit an inaccessible reserve by hauling a steamboat over a mountain. No special effects here! Werner Herzog actually dragged a 320-ton ship up a slope…a move nearly as mad as casting maniacal lunatic Klaus Kinski as his lead. This screening is presented in conjunction with a Cinema Classics Seminar taught by Jennifer Fleeger, Ph.D. Seating for screening-only attendees will begin at 1:00 pm.
