Born Shauna McKenzie, Etana is celebrated worldwide for her captivating fusion of folk, soul, jazz, and reggae. Her journey from a pop music hopeful in the United States to a reggae icon in her native Jamaica is a testament to her strength and artistry, befitting her name, which means "The Strong One" in Swahili. Etana's debut album, "The Strong One," launched her into the international spotlight with hits like “Warrior Love” and “I Am Not Afraid,” both of which resonated deeply with audiences and secured a prominent place on the Reggae Billboard charts. Following this, her second album, "Free Expressions," continued her chart success with beloved tracks such as “Free” and “Happy Heart.” In 2014, Etana made history with her album "I Rise," which topped the Reggae Billboard chart, marking the first time in seventeen years that a female Jamaican artist achieved this honor. Her groundbreaking work continued with "Reggae Forever," earning her a Grammy nomination and highlighting her as the first female nominee in the Best Reggae Album category in over two decades.
