Film screening of Ken Russell’s The Devils (Director’s Cut) with a trivia segment.
Banned for 55 years, the uncut NC-17 version of “The Chancellor of Controversy”, Ken Russell’s *(Crimes of Passion),* most notorious film has never been seen in the United States until now in a newly restored 4K restoration of THE DEVILS. \* Starring Oliver Reed (Revolver), Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement), Dudley Sutton (Lovejoy – TV series), Max Adrian (The Boy Friend), Gemma Jones (Sense and Sensibility), Murray Melvin (The Phantom of the Opera) and Michael Gothard (Lifeforce). \-\-\-\- **TRIVIA** * Warner Bros. refused for over 50 years to issue an official uncut home-video or streaming release of Russell's complete director's cut, turning the original version into a legendary lost artifact of cinema until recent festival restorations. The 2026 4K re-release is the first ever release from Warner Brothers to get an NC-17 rating. * Derek Jarman's sets are modeled on the sets of Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927). Ken Russell wanted to avoid the clichéd look of period films and insisted on anachronistic, even futuristic, design. Russell's guidance to Jarman was that it should echo the 'rape in a public toilet' line from the Huxley novel that inspired the film. * Dame Vanessa Redgrave wrote in her autobiography that she considers this film, along with The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), to be the finest example of British post-war cinema and one of the best movies she'd been in.
